Plectrum Practice

Three tools that feel like one instrument.

A drone, an interactive circle of fifths, and a sample-accurate metronome. They run together, so the drone keeps sounding while you set a tempo.

What is in it

Drone
Twelve chromatic roots across four modes: fifth, major, minor, and a custom chord you build by tapping keys. Sixteen voices of supersaw unison, octave doubles and sub layers, through a four second convolution reverb. It sustains while you play over it and keeps going when the screen locks.
Circle of Fifths
Tap any key to set the tonic. Turn the dial to cycle all twelve keys by fourths or fifths, major or minor, at your tempo and beats per chord, with a bass note on every chord change. Or switch to Build and assemble your own progression up to sixteen chords, each with its own beat count.
Metronome
Sample-accurate scheduling on the audio render thread, so it does not drift. Twist the ring to set tempo or tap it in. 30 to 240 BPM in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8, with a downbeat accent and a one or two bar count-in.
The fretboard, one tap away
A drawer on every screen showing eleven scales in any key: the seven modes, both pentatonics, harmonic and melodic minor. CAGED and three-notes-per-string overlays show you where the shape actually sits. Full screen in landscape.
Everything runs together
The drone keeps sounding as you switch tabs, and the metronome runs alongside it with independent volume and mute for each. Audio continues in the background and mixes politely with whatever else you are playing.
No account, no network
Nothing to sign up for and nothing to sync. The app works with the plane in flight mode and never sends anything anywhere.

Worth knowing

  • Six string guitar in standard tuning. Alternate tunings are not supported yet.
  • Dark interface throughout. There is no light mode.
  • Portrait and landscape on iPhone.
  • Audio keeps playing when the app is backgrounded or the screen is locked.
